Robot Soccer Robo Cup 2006
World Cup Soccer fever has broken out in Germany – and Soccer will be on the agenda in
Bremen, too, at RoboCup, the Robot World Championship at the Bremen Exhibition Centre. About
440 registered teams from 40 countries will be competing in different leagues for a place in
the final: autonomous robots – either on four feet, two legs or various wheels – will
participate in an attempt to win fame and honour.
- The event will start with a catastrophe: on Tuesday 13 June 2006 at 16:00 hrs a “chemical
accident” on Bremen’s Bürgerweide will create a disturbance and robots will be called upon
to save the “victims”.
- The official opening of RoboCup will take place on Wednesday 14 June at 9:30 hrs on the
centre court in Hall 5.
- We have also organized a press conference for you with detailed information on the 10th
RoboCup on Wednesday 14 June at 10:30 hrs in Lloyd Hall at the Congress Centre Bremen.
Please note that the opening ceremony and the press conference will be conducted in English.
- There will be a further press conference on ACTUATOR, the 10th International Conference on
New Actuators & 4th International Exhibition on Smart Actuators and Drive Systems which is
being held parallel to RoboCup, also in Lloyd Hall at 11:30 hrs.

RoboCup: A short history about RoboCup
In 2006 RoboCup will celebrate its 10th Birthday: Yet the roots of RoboCup reach way back
into the early 1990’s. At that time, the Japanese Scientist Mr. Hiroaki Kitano was a guest
scientist at Carnegie Mellon University. He remembers, “In 1991, I envisioned the frame
work, in the form of a conference, for a Robotic competition. The robots moved slowly, stood
stationary for a few minutes, before moving a second time. It was very boring. I thought it
made sense to define an interesting challenging task, that when implemented, would demand
the Robots to move faster.”
At the same time, many scientists were searching for a symbolic pursuit, an easily
recognizable and appealing goal within the research of artificial intelligence. Initially,
Mr. Kitano took targets within solid applications such as: nursing or disasters work into
consideration. However, this proved to be hard, because a clear focus on the requirements of
the Robots could vary considerably from country to country. Therefore, a breakdown was
inevitable. So instead of concentrating directly on a specify application, he found it a
better strategy to put aside his earlier orientation and develop some type of game that used
the basic technology required and then use this technology to crossover into other areas.
Soccer proved itself to be the game that would allow the application of basic technology
towards the development of a wide variety of applications.
Originally, Mr. Kitano had only a Japanese challenge in mind. However, the positive reaction
he received from research colleagues throughout the world encouraged him to add the
international community thus “Robot World Cup” in short RoboCup. Further, the long-term goal
towards human robots winnings a soccer championship by 2050 was being pushed forward with
enthusiasm.
Until then, the Robots had been kicking only amongst each other for the title. The first
world championship RoboCup was held in 1997 in the Japanese city of Nagoya. 38 teams from 11
countries shoved together in a corner of a conference hall. There were 3 leagues
(Simulation, Small Size and Middle Size) competing to establish the best of the best. In the
following years other leagues were added (1999: 4-legged League, 2000: Junior League. 2001:
Rescue League, 2002: Humanoid League), at the same time the demands made of the robots were
increasing: playing fields were enlarged, the numbers of orientation markers were decreased
and lighting was reduced.
Every year the number of participants in the RoboCup competitions had increased. In Lisbon,
Portugal July 2004, 345 teams from 37 countries were registered to participate. More than a
thousand scientists world-wide are currently involved in RoboCup. They are ready to
participate in year-round RoboCup competitions both on national and regional levels. Some of
these include: the German Open, the Japan Open and the American Open. Eight years after the
first world championship, RoboCup has become the most important Robot challenges in the
world; the Formel-1 of Robots has been established!
Robocup 2006 will be held from the 14th until the 20th of June at the Messe Bremen, Germany.
The organisers of this event are the Fair Centre Bremen, and the Technology Centrum of
Information (TZI) Bremen. You will find more information under www.roboCup2006.org.
